The Inland Waterways Development Council recently concluded its first meeting in Kolkata, aiming to strengthen the country’s inland waterway system. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, introduced the Harit Nauka Initiative – Roadmap “Guidelines for Green Transition of Inland Waterways and River Cruise Tourism”, 2047. The meeting, held on board the ship MV Ganga Queen, showcased the opportunities offered by the waterways sector.
The Harit Nauka Guidelines reflect the ministry’s commitment to promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable passenger transport on inland waterways. The ministry highlighted the country’s increased capacity in building Green Vessels, with a new facility for building electric vessels set up at Hooghly Cochin Shipyard Limited. Additionally, the minister unveiled the River Cruise Tourism Roadmap 2047, which focuses on infrastructure, integration, accessibility, and policies to promote river cruise tourism, identifying over 30 possible routes and tourist circuits for further development.
The meeting also included discussions on the increased adoption of low emission fuels for inland waterway operations, emphasizing the ministry’s efforts to promote a greener approach. The development of infrastructure and policies for river cruise tourism was a key focus, highlighting the potential for growth and expansion in the sector.
