During his visit to South Korea, the Vice-Chancellor of Mount Kenya University, Prof. Stanley Waudo Maina, met with members of the Korean Ship Owners Association. He received assurance from the association that they will be recruiting trained Kenyans for the next five years. To prepare Kenyans for employment in the maritime sector, the university has been offering a short course in Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping. This course is globally administered and ensures a standard of training is achieved across all countries. The university graduates about 10 students each week from this course.

Maina found that people in South Korea were earning over Sh100,000 in low cadre jobs in the maritime sector, such as security guards. Those in more specialized positions earned even more. As a result, the university is planning to introduce Bachelor of Science programs in Maritime Engineering and Maritime Transport next year. Maina urged youth to take advantage of the course to escape unemployment. The university’s chancellor, Peter Munga, believes that this partnership with South Korea will bring about transformation in the institution and the country. The university also plans to offer a Korean language course to help Kenyans adapt easily to jobs in the Asian country and boost the economy by reducing youth unemployment.
