South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Lee Jang-keun has expressed an interest in attracting skilled workers from Bangladesh’s shipbuilding sector to South Korea. Jang-keun made the comments during a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Ganabhaban. The Prime Minister said Korea’s development success story has been an inspiration to Bangladesh as it seeks to develop and prosper. The South Korean envoy commended the improvement in trade, official development assistance (ODA), employment and investment between the two countries.

Jang-keun reported that Bangladesh-Korea trade reached $3bn in 2021, with ODA at $3bn, up from $500mn in the previous year. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi Prime Minister’s Press Secretary, Ihsanul Karim, noted the importance of economic cooperation between Southeast Asian nations and lauded Korea’s transformation into a developed country within a generation. The South Korean envoy’s visit was his last as outgoing ambassador to Bangladesh, a country that he said would always be close to his heart. The meeting was also attended by Mohammad Ziauddin, the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy, and Mohammad Tofazzel Hossain Miah, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister.
