Behavioural change startup Signol has partnered with Stolt Tankers on a project to reduce shipping emissions using IoT data. The six-month pilot project will run on seven vessels and aims to help seafarers understand the impact of their actions on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, motivating them to adopt more sustainable behaviours. Stolt Tankers is using a human-centred, tech-enabled approach by combining sensor data with behavioural change techniques. Five of the vessels will use continuous monitoring data through sensors connected to the ship’s power management and automation systems, providing real-time information to the crew and shoreside teams. The use of real-time IoT data allows for more proactive and immediate decision-making, leading to improved operational efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, and enhanced safety. Signol claims that its solution has shown fuel savings exceeding 5% in the maritime sector, delivering a return on investment in the months after launch without requiring additional capital investment.
