Srettha Thavisin stated that relocating Bangkok Port would result in reduced pollution for local citizens, coming from both ships and trucks entering and leaving the port. The Ministry of Transport and the Port Authority of Thailand are set to conduct a relocation study following this decision. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration had previously expressed its support for moving the port to Laem Chabang, which serves as Thailand’s primary port.
The construction of Bangkok Port and the dredging of the Chao Phraya River began in 1938, but was halted during World War II in 1940. The first phase was completed in 1947, with a maximum draft of 8.2 meters. The port experienced significant growth until the 1990s when Laem Chabang was developed to provide deep-water access as an alternative. This move towards relocation aims to improve air quality and reduce congestion in the city, benefiting the local community and environment.
