Seafarers are increasingly relying on digital technologies for work and leisure, emphasizing the importance of fast, reliable, and always-on connectivity while at sea, according to Inmarsat’s report ‘The Digital Wave’. Published by Inmarsat Maritime, the report explores how crews and shore-based teams are utilizing digital tools and the connectivity needed for both work and leisure activities.
The research reveals that 88% of seafarers surveyed have Internet access for both work and leisure, spending an average of five hours a day using digital tools for work-related tasks. Smart ship technologies are being used on deck to optimize route planning and manage energy consumption, while the implementation of artificial intelligence systems at sea is on the rise to enhance situational awareness and reduce navigational errors.
In response to the growing demand for connectivity at sea, Inmarsat has introduced NexusWave, a fully managed service that integrates multiple high-speed networks to ensure fast and reliable Internet access for vessels. This seamless connectivity not only supports operational safety and efficiency but also enhances crew welfare by enabling seafarers to stay connected with their loved ones and access mental health support services while at sea.
