French sailing freight transport company TransOceanic Wind Transport (TOWT) has recently joined the Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs), a non-profit organization focused on promoting sustainable marine industry practices. ZESTAs aims to advocate for zero-emissions ship technology (ZEST) and works with regulators to introduce legislation that encourages the use of environmentally friendly practices in the maritime sector. TOWT’s involvement in ZESTAs reflects its commitment to sustainability and economic viability in the shipping industry.
In line with its efforts to reduce carbon emissions, TOWT has ordered six new vessels from French shipbuilder Piriou, set to launch in 2026 and 2027. This expansion will bring TOWT’s fleet to a total of eight ships, solidifying its position as the owner of the world’s largest fleet of sail cargo ships. By focusing on sailing transport since 2011, TOWT has been able to significantly reduce CO2 emissions compared to traditional fossil-powered container ships.
Through the introduction of the Phoenix class sailboats, TOWT expects to achieve a reduction of over 95% in CO2 emissions. With plans to transport around 200,000 tonnes of goods, TOWT aims to save approximately 40,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. By actively participating in ZESTAs and investing in sustainable technologies, TOWT is demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation in the maritime industry.
