Two crewmembers tragically lost their lives in an engine room fire aboard the general cargo ship FG Sevil on October 31. The vessel, with a deadweight tonnage of 6,600, was en route from Yalova, Turkey to Bulgaria when the fire broke out in the engine room. The incident occurred off Sedef Island in the Sea of Marmara, east of Istanbul. Turkish rescue teams responded swiftly, extinguishing the fire and evacuating those on board.
Turkish authorities dispatched two tugboats and an evacuation boat to combat the fire on the FG Sevil. The vessel was carrying 17 crewmembers and eight workers from a Turkish shipyard at the time of the incident. Despite efforts to contain and extinguish the fire, two crewmembers were found unresponsive in the engine room and were later confirmed deceased. The tugboat Sark towed the vessel to a safe anchorage, where it will undergo further investigation.
The tragic incident on the FG Sevil underscores the dangers faced by crewmembers at sea. The loss of two lives serves as a sobering reminder of the risks involved in maritime operations. The investigation into the engine room fire will seek to determine the cause of the blaze and prevent similar accidents in the future. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the deceased crewmembers during this difficult time.
