Turkmenistan has announced its accession to the Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) at a Cabinet of Ministers meeting chaired by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. The decision, reported by the Director General of the Agency of Transport and Communications, Mammethan Chakyev, aims to enhance international cooperation, simplify maritime shipping procedures, and improve trade relations with other countries. Joining the IMO convention will align national legislation with international standards, increase maritime industry efficiency, and ensure safety in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea.
The modernization of Turkmenistan’s transport infrastructure and expansion of its maritime fleet are currently underway. President Berdimuhamedov emphasized the need to increase cargo transportation by sea and river transport, instructing the head of the Agency to take appropriate steps in this direction. The country’s accession to the IMO convention is expected to facilitate these goals and contribute to the development of the maritime industry in Turkmenistan.
