Udupi Cochin Shipyard Secures International Order for Six Diesel-Electric Cargo Ships

Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL), a subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), has been awarded an international shipbuilding contract by Wilson ASA for the production of six new generation diesel-electric cargo ships. The project, known as the ‘future-proof dry cargo vessel’ project, is valued at 580 crore and includes the design and construction of the vessels, with an option for an additional eight ships. The cargo vessels are intended for use in inland and coastal waters of Europe and will be used for the transportation of general cargo.

The innovative short sea shipping general cargo vessels, designed by Conoship International from the Netherlands, will have a deadweight of 3,800 tonnes. These ships will be propelled by electric motors in combination with diesel generator sets. The large diameter propellers ensure optimal efficiency and minimal fuel consumption. Moreover, the vessel’s design allows for easy fuel type switching in the future, with the possibility of incorporating battery hybrid systems.

The first ship is scheduled to be delivered by December 2024, with the remaining deliveries set to be completed by March 2026. This international shipbuilding order not only highlights UCSL’s expertise in the industry but also strengthens the position of CSL as the largest shipbuilder in India. With this project, UCSL and CSL demonstrate their commitment to delivering high-quality, environmentally friendly vessels that meet the evolving needs of the shipping industry.
