Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract with UK Dredging to supply a Shoalbuster 2711 Water Injection Dredger (WID). UK Dredging, which is a part of Associated British Ports (ABP), operates the largest dredging fleet in Britain and currently uses hopper dredgers for maintenance dredging in ABP ports. The addition of a smaller water injection dredger will allow them to extend the intervals between hopper dredging operations, improving efficiency. Damen has customized the Shoalbuster 2711 design to suit the project’s requirements, including optimizing the vessel’s hull and incorporating an efficient diesel-electric system to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The dredger will also feature a fully electric Damen E-DOP450 dredge pump and a hydraulically operated A-frame, enhancing its versatility.

The use of the E-DOP and A-frame not only contributes to the vessel’s multi-functionality but also allows for easy dismounting and storage of the plough and pump on the quayside, freeing the vessel for other operations. Joppe Neijens, Damen sales manager dredging, expressed the company’s delight in collaborating with UK Dredging again and highlighted the adaptability of their standardized shipbuilding approach. The Shoalbuster 2711 WID is not only versatile but also sustainable and cost-effective, making it an excellent concept for present and future operations.

Mark Pearson, general manager of UK Dredging, acknowledged the significance of this contract and its contribution to their fleet’s capabilities. The incorporation of water injection dredging techniques will allow them to optimize their dredging operations for various conditions. The highly efficient diesel-electric propulsion and power system of the Shoalbuster 2711 WID will also help in reducing fuel consumption and emissions, demonstrating UK Dredging’s commitment to minimizing their carbon footprint.

In conclusion, Damen’s contract with UK Dredging for the delivery of a custom Shoalbuster 2711 WID showcases the adaptability and efficiency of their standardized shipbuilding approach. The vessel’s modification and incorporation of innovative technologies will enhance UK Dredging’s operations by extending dredging intervals, reducing fuel consumption, and minimizing emissions, thus promoting sustainability within the industry.
