The UK’s Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) has launched a year-long campaign called Careers at Sea National Awareness Campaign to raise awareness about the shipping industry and the numerous career opportunities it offers. The aim is to combat sea blindness and highlight the importance of the industry.

The UK shipping industry currently supports 650,000 jobs but is experiencing a shortage of new talent. In 2023, only 600 cadets joined the sector, falling short of the 2,000 needed annually to maintain a steady supply of seafarers. This shortage could impact economic growth and social well-being as shipping plays a crucial role in the UK economy.

According to Kathryn Neilson, the Director of the Merchant Navy Training Board, a career in shipping is highly rewarding, offering opportunities for growth and transition from sea to shore roles. Many individuals may not be aware of the opportunities the industry presents, which is why the campaign focuses on promoting the industry’s importance to the wider public and showcasing that a career in shipping can be for everyone.

The campaign aims to reach individuals who may thrive in the industry but are currently unaware of the opportunities available. By highlighting the diverse career paths and opportunities within the shipping industry, the MNTB hopes to attract more talent to bridge the current gap in the sector.
