The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Ulsan Port Authority have achieved a world first by completing a ship-to-ship supply of green methanol on a large container ship in the port of Ulsan, South Korea. This was made possible through the establishment of institutional basis and expertise accumulation, as well as the success of previous methanol supply demonstrations. This achievement holds great significance in the growing competition between ports worldwide for the methanol fuel market.
The successful completion of this ship-to-ship supply of green methanol is expected to further strengthen the position of Korean ports as a location for sustainable ship fueling and promote the growth of Korea’s sustainable ship fueling industry in the future. Both the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Ulsan Port Authority are committed to modernizing related systems and working with the private sector to ensure the economic viability of sustainable marine fuel supply. This is part of their efforts to achieve the goal of achieving net zero in the global shipping sector by 2050.
Minister Kang Do-Hyung emphasized the increasing competition among international ports to provide sustainable shipping fuel and stated their commitment to leading the global trend of transitioning to sustainable fuels. President Kim Jae-gyun of Ulsan Port Authority expressed their dedication to becoming a hub port for sustainable marine fuel supply and proactively responding to the paradigm shift in marine fuel.
