Teledyne Marine has teamed up with BetweenMusic, a Danish performance group led by Leila Skovmand and Robert Karlsson, to create an innovative underwater concert experience called AquaSonic. Using Teledyne Marine’s hydrophones, the music ensemble was able to perform all the music for AquaSonic underwater, overcoming the challenge of water absorbing high frequencies more readily than air.

The collaboration between BetweenMusic and Teledyne Marine led to the development of unique instruments for underwater concerts and required the singers to be trained to perform underwater, presenting a challenge for both the performers and audio engineers. Laila Skovmand, the Artistic Director of BetweenMusic and lead singer, described the process of adapting to singing underwater and the inspiration drawn from whale recordings.

AquaSonic is a captivating performance where five performers are submerged in glass water tanks, playing custom-made instruments, and singers perform entirely underwater. While the group currently performs on stage, they have aspirations to perform in open water in the future. Their first album, recorded with Teledyne Marine’s hydrophones, is set to be released in 2025, showcasing the unique and mesmerizing underwater symphony perfected through their collaboration.
