Union Minister Sonowal affirms commitment to maritime trade development

The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has reiterated the Narendra Modi government’s commitment to the development of the eastern region of India and neighboring countries such as Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Nepal. The minister expressed this sentiment while attending a critical meeting of maritime stakeholders.

Sonowal highlighted the enormous potential that exists in the eastern region of India, which is comprised of 11 states, and is home to over 320 million people. He emphasized that this region is a vital component of India’s overall economic strategy, given its vast natural resources, including oil, gas, coal, and minerals.

The minister went on to say that the government is taking various initiatives to develop the region’s ports and waterways. He mentioned that the Sagarmala Program, which aims to modernize India’s ports and waterways infrastructure, is already benefitting these states, with projects such as the development of deep-sea fishing harbors, waterfront development, and the construction of new ports and jetties.

In addition, Sonowal stressed the importance of enhancing connectivity within the region, especially in terms of road, rail, and air transport. He stated that the government is working on a comprehensive plan to upgrade the region’s transportation infrastructure, which will include the development of new highways, rail lines, and airports.

In conclusion, Sonowal reassured the stakeholders that the government is committed to the development of the eastern region of India and the neighboring countries, and urged them to work together to realize the tremendous potential of this region. He also emphasized the need to ensure that this growth is inclusive and reaches all sections of society, particularly the marginalized communities.
