The cargo ship Hung Phat 89 (HP89) registered in Vietnam faced an emergency 380 nautical miles east of Vung Tau, Vietnam, on March 10, 2024. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) responded promptly to a distress call from the ship, sending navigational broadcasts to nearby vessels and notifying MRCC Vietnam. The troubled vessel, owned by Thai Duong Marine Transport, was successfully rescued by the Vietnam Coast Guard, but unfortunately sank despite rescue efforts.
The incident highlights the importance of swift action and cooperation among maritime authorities to ensure the safety of seafarers and vessels in emergencies. The collaborative efforts of MRCC Singapore and MRCC Vietnam in responding to the distress call demonstrate the effectiveness of maritime authorities in handling such situations. The sinking of the HP89 serves as a reminder of the risks faced by those navigating the waters and the need for vigilance and preparedness in maritime operations.
