Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to develop a cutting-edge prototype for a Next Generation Vessel Traffic Management System (NGVTMS). This system aims to enhance maritime safety and efficiency at one of the world’s busiest ports. The order was finalized in the third quarter of 2024, highlighting Singapore’s commitment to advancing its position as a leading global maritime hub.
The MPA recognizes the increasing volume of maritime traffic and the need for more sophisticated traffic management solutions. In response, they are leading the way in adopting AI-driven technologies to improve navigational safety and optimize port operations. Wärtsilä, along with other industry leaders, was selected in April 2024 to bring the NGVTMS project to life, based on an agile approach and open system architecture.
Over the next 15 months, Wärtsilä will collaborate with the MPA at its Maritime Innovation Lab 2.0 to develop the NGVTMS prototype. This system will incorporate advanced features such as data analytics and machine learning algorithms to help vessel traffic officers manage increasing traffic volumes and complex scenarios more effectively. Wärtsilä’s involvement in this project highlights its expertise and capabilities in the maritime sector, aligning with its mission to drive sustainable development through technological innovation and services.
