WISTA International, the leading professional association for women in the maritime industry, marked its 50th anniversary by introducing a new equity fund and welcoming three new national organizations. The association’s anniversary conference took place in Cyprus and featured keynote speeches from Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis, who praised WISTA for championing gender equality and empowering women in the shipping sector.
During the conference, IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized the need for the shipping industry to embrace change and announced his personal commitment to participating in panels that include both women and men. With 5,200 members worldwide, WISTA has expanded significantly since its establishment in 1974. WISTA President Elpi Petraki revealed plans to broaden the organization’s mission to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion while advocating for sustainable practices in shipping for future generations.
In a significant milestone, WISTA welcomed new national associations in Honduras, China, and Costa Rica, bringing the total number of member organizations to 62. The association also launched an equity fund to aid members facing challenges in their respective countries. WISTA’s achievements over the past 50 years reflect its commitment to advancing women in the maritime industry and fostering a supportive environment for professional growth and success.
