Dr. Odunayo Ani, President of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA), expressed gratitude towards Nigerian seafarers for their significant contributions to global trade as the world commemorates the Day of the Seafarer on 25 June 2024. Dr. Ani, who also serves as a director at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), emphasized the importance of seafarers’ commitment to safety in making the maritime sector a secure workplace. She commended seafarers for their diligence in adhering to safety protocols and ensuring smooth and sustainable trade processes involving shipping.
On the occasion of the 2024 Day of the Seafarer celebration, WISTA Nigeria acknowledges and appreciates seafarers worldwide, particularly Nigerian seafarers, for their dedicated efforts in facilitating global trade. Dr. Ani highlighted the safety-consciousness of seafarers in carrying out their duties, emphasizing the crucial role they play in various maritime activities such as fishing, deep-sea mining, and transportation. She praised seafarers, including marine engineers and ship captains, for their unwavering commitment to safety and efficiency at sea.
The Day of the Seafarer, observed on 25 June, was established to recognize the invaluable contributions of seafarers to international seaborne trade, the global economy, and civil society. The resolution adopted during the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila emphasizes the need for governments, shipping organizations, companies, and other stakeholders to promote and celebrate the Day of the Seafarer in a meaningful way. This annual observance serves as a tribute to the dedication and hard work of seafarers worldwide.
