The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has provided an update on its investigation into the power outage on the container ship dali and its subsequent collision with the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge. The update is part of an ongoing investigation and does not provide any conclusions about the cause of the incident. Preliminary results indicated that electrical fuses tripped during the vessel’s departure from Seagirt Marine Terminal, resulting in a total loss of power that affected the ship’s lights and most equipment.
NTSB investigators discovered an issue in the ship’s power distribution system related to an open circuit in an electrical component. Further examination of the components is being conducted by the NTSB Materials Laboratory. The investigation is ongoing to determine the probable cause of the incident and possible safety recommendations. The incident led to the ship losing power and colliding with the bridge, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
The NTSB’s preliminary report also revealed previous power outages on the dali, including one caused by crew error and another due to insufficient fuel pressure. The investigation is looking into the ship’s electrical configuration and its impact on the accident. Following the incident, the dali has left Baltimore for the first time, with NTSB investigators conducting on-board technical system inspections and documenting structural damage. The investigation continues to determine the cause of the power outage and collision with the bridge.
