On Monday, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the Gujarat Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Policy 2026, aiming to establish the state as a global maritime hub. The initiative focuses on modern infrastructure, advanced technologies, and sustainable practices, aligning with national goals for shipbuilding and enhancing Gujarat’s extensive maritime capabilities.
Gujarat is set to enhance its maritime capabilities with the development of three greenfield shipyards and six new ports along its coast, representing a major expansion of India’s maritime infrastructure. The initiative, with an estimated investment exceeding Rs 35,000 crore, aims to position Gujarat as a leading hub for shipbuilding.
A new Lighthouse Museum in Gujarat will offer visitors a unique experience atop a 17-storey building, overlooking the remnants of one of the oldest civilizations, Lothal. Part of the National Maritime Heritage Complex, the museum will feature a café at 54 meters, blending ancient history with modern architecture for a captivating experience.
The ministry has approved a greenfield shipbuilding cluster in Porbandar, along with a ship repair facility in Vadinar. Spanning 2,000 acres, it will feature advanced shipyards and manufacturing units, aiming to produce large vessels with an annual capacity of 1.2 to 1.5 million gross tonnage, enhancing India’s maritime capabilities.
Gujarat has launched a shipbuilding subsidy of up to ₹50 crore for local shipyards, aiming to boost India’s maritime industry. This initiative offers financial support of 8% on eligible expenses, enhancing shipyard infrastructure and promoting domestic vessel production. It aligns with national efforts to position India among the top shipbuilding nations by 2047.
The recent conflict in Iran, paired with the southwest monsoon, underscores Salaya port’s crucial role in Gujarat’s mechanised sailing vessel trade with the Gulf. Serving as a safe haven for 175 MSVs, Salaya enables the transportation of vital goods, while also facilitating regulatory changes to enhance safety for these vessels amid geopolitical tensions.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an advanced Ship Repair Facility in Vadinar, Gujarat, with a ₹1,570 crore investment. Under the Cruise Bharat Mission, Gujarat plans three cruise circuits along its coast, featuring destinations like Diu, Jamnagar, and Dwarka. Clusters include Padala Island and routes connecting historical and cultural sites within 100 km. The Gujarat Maritime Board is enhancing infrastructure and promoting sustainable cruise tourism growth.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has authorized Chhara Port in Gujarat for LNG imports, enhancing India’s energy security. This certification enables Simar Ports Private Limited to manage LNG operations in compliance with the Petroleum Rules. The approval is valid from May 19, 2025, to May 18, 2028, supporting national gas needs.
Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd reported a consolidated net profit of £3,969 million for the 2025 financial year, a 16% increase fueled by rising fluid and RO-RO freight volumes. Despite profitability, income remained flat at £9,876 million, impacted by lower container throughput and dry bulk freight challenges. A final dividend of £4.20 per share was recommended.
