A 15-year-old boy from East Aceh, known as MY, was detained by Thai authorities while fishing during school holidays. Arrested alongside 19 other Indonesians in Phuket, he faced legal proceedings in a foreign country. After over six weeks, he was repatriated with support from the Indonesian Consulate and KRI Songkhla.
The Australian Border Force has ramped up its crackdown on illegal Indonesian fishing, recently intercepting two boats off the Northern Territory. Eight fishermen were arrested, and their vessels destroyed. In total, authorities seized 2.1 tonnes of sea cucumber, potentially worth US$140,000, underscoring the risks of illegal fishing in Australian waters.
On Monday, the Indonesian ferry Muchlisa sank off East Kalimantan, resulting in the deaths of two crew members. The incident occurred during a journey from Balikpapan to Penajam when the ferry’s engine failed, leading to hull damage. Despite grounding itself on a sandbar, it later sank offshore.
