On July 28, 2025, a tragic boating accident in Biscayne Bay claimed the lives of two children and left two others critically injured. A barge collided with a sailboat involved in a youth sailing program, causing it to capsize. Emergency responders quickly arrived, but two children were pronounced dead at local hospitals.
The Captain of the Port for Coast Guard Sector Miami has introduced a new regulated navigation area around Port Miami to address concerns about high-speed vessel operations. The slow speed zone will apply to vessels under 50 meters in certain channels to prevent accidents and disruptions to maritime traffic. Enforcement begins on January 29, 2025.
