Seafarer welfare centres give crews a place to rest, call home and get help in port. This practical 2026 guide explains the services they offer, what MLC 2006 says about shore welfare, how to find a centre in your next port, and how welfare staff can support you in a crisis.
The dwindling volunteer workforce in Australia is jeopardizing shore leave for seafarers, complicating their access to essential services. With an aging average age of 80, the Mission to Seafarers struggles to provide necessary transport and welfare support, leaving many crew members without vital time on land during their contracts.
The latest Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) survey reveals a decline in seafarers’ happiness due to restrictive port policies. Connectivity issues, stagnant wages, training frustrations, workload, and lack of social interaction onboard were cited as major concerns. Addressing these issues could improve morale, teamwork, and overall well-being for seafarers at sea.
