Viking Cruises plans to tap into the tourism potential of the Brahmaputra River with its new ship, Viking Brahmaputra, launching by the end of 2027. Developed by Hooghly Cochin Shipyard, this initiative reflects the growing global interest in India’s waterways, supported by significant investments and infrastructure improvements from the IWAI.
The Government of India is investing Rs 1,010 crore in developing Brahmaputra and Barak rivers in Assam, focusing on infrastructure for inland waterways, tourism, and transportation. Projects include slipway construction, terminals, and a religious tourism circuit, aiming to enhance connectivity and economic growth. Maintenance dredging and operational measures will ensure safe navigation for vessels.

India has made strides in river cruise tourism, with the MV Ganga Vilas providing a long and successful cruise. With increased investments and policy reforms, there has been a fivefold increase in freight on national waterways.
