Survitec is urging shipowners and managers to prepare for new IMO fire protection regulations effective January 1, 2026. These require fixed water monitors on weather decks of Roro and Ropax vessels to address rising fire incidents, particularly with electric vehicles. These monitors offer efficient, targeted protection, enhancing crew safety during firefighting.
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding in Japan is joining the ranks of shipyards constructing ocean-going methanol-fueled vessels. With a limited number of shipyards currently building such ships, Mitsubishi secured an order for Japan’s first methanol dual-fuel RoRo car carriers. These innovative vessels will feature design enhancements to boost efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions, offering benefits like improved schedule flexibility and crew rest time.
The UK is funding a project to expand the use of rotor sails to more classes of vessels. Anemoi Marine Technologies, along with partners, will develop and demonstrate a smaller sized rotor sail suitable for mid-range vessels. The project, costing £1.9 million, aims to assess the performance of the new design.
