A recent report by Sailors’ Society reveals the alarming prevalence of bullying and harassment at sea, with active seafarers facing such behavior up to ten times more than non-seafarers. The report highlights the disproportionate impact on female cadets and LGBTQ+ individuals, urging the maritime industry to foster a safer, more inclusive environment.
Female seafarers are a small minority in the maritime workforce, but there has been a 45% increase in women pursuing careers at sea in the past decade. Challenges include workplace culture, career advancement, and support systems. Sailors’ Society offers specific support through a female helpline and Peer-to-Peer Support Group to address these issues.
Sailors’ Society has launched a helpline for female seafarers, offering emotional support and crisis assistance. With women making up only 2% of the maritime workforce, this initiative aims to provide a safe space for female cadets and seafarers to seek help. Supported by Skuld, the helpline is a step towards gender equality in the industry.
Thanks to additional funding from the ITF Seafarer’s Trust, thousands of cadets in India will now receive comprehensive wellness training and support through the Sailors’ Society’s new program. The collaboration aims to equip cadets for successful maritime careers by addressing their well-being and preparing them for life at sea.
Sailors’ Society has launched its 2023/4 cadet report, “Generation Z – the future of maritime,” providing insights on retention, wellbeing, and diversity from over 4,000 cadets globally. The report challenges stereotypes and highlights the priorities and concerns of the next generation of seafarers, shaping the future of the maritime industry.
