The 22-year-old tanker Dakar is navigating Russia’s Northern Sea Route without an ice-class designation, raising safety concerns as the Arctic season wanes. Carrying methyl tert-butyl ether from South Korea, it underscores a trend of conventional vessels risking late-season voyages despite heightened ice risks, amidst EU sanctions for transporting Russian petroleum.
An oil slick of approximately 390 square kilometers has been reported off Oman’s coast, following damage to the sanctioned vessel Caroline Bezengi, which was carrying Russian crude. Initial assessments suggest an onboard explosion. Efforts to address the leak are underway, with concerns about environmental impact growing as the spill spreads.
The Swedish Coast Guard has directed a tanker, suspected of causing an oil spill in the Baltic Sea, to anchor in Swedish waters. The vessel, under EU sanctions, is being investigated for potential environmental crimes. Authorities emphasize a zero-tolerance policy for pollution in the sensitive Baltic ecosystem.
Swedish authorities have boarded the oil tanker Sea Owl I in the Baltic Sea, suspecting it operates under a false flag. The intervention, part of increasing maritime enforcement, raises concerns about the vessel’s seaworthiness and registration under the Comorian flag, which is unverified. Investigations are ongoing regarding its legal status.
