An international coalition of shipping trade associations has urged UN Secretary General António Guterres and IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez to reject proposed tolls in the Strait of Hormuz. They emphasize maintaining safety for seafarers and the importance of freedom of navigation for global supply chains, energy security, and economic stability.
The UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) has strongly opposed tolls on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, warning it could set a “dangerous precedent.” The IMO stressed that no international agreement allows such charges, asserting that the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea protects the right to free passage.
