Jersey is pivotal in an international initiative assessing the S-100 data framework for maritime navigation. Spearheaded by the UK Hydrographic Office and SHOM, this project leverages high-quality bathymetric data from Ports of Jersey. The S-100 standards promise enhanced navigation safety, optimized voyages, and improved port efficiency for global trade.
Testing is underway for a new system designed to reduce methane slip on an LNG bunker vessel. Methane emissions are potent greenhouse gases, prompting the LNG industry to innovate. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Daihatsu Infinearth have developed a catalyst system, achieving over 70% methane oxidation in initial tests.
The Port of Rotterdam recently tested its capabilities for future ammonia bunkering operations, in anticipation of the arrival of ammonia-fueled vessels in 2026 or 2027. Safety protocols were enhanced, with successful ship-to-ship transfer of 800 cubic meters of liquid ammonia using gray ammonia. The industry is making strides towards using ammonia as a viable alternative fuel source.
