The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is providing 100% financial support for projects under the Sagarmala program to improve terminals and riverine infrastructure along the Brahmaputra River in Assam. These projects aim to enhance connectivity, promote economic growth, and stimulate industrial development and trade in the region. Initiatives include constructing slipways, setting up passenger terminals at strategic locations, and developing ferry infrastructure to modernize public transport.
Minister Sonowal highlighted the importance of harnessing the potential of the Brahmaputra River as an alternative, economical, and environmentally friendly mode of transport. The Central government’s focus on enhancing waterways in the country, specifically in northeastern states like Assam, is evident through projects worth over Rs 1,000 crore under the Sagarmala scheme. Additionally, plans for developing river tourism and water sports along the Brahmaputra include constructing tourist jetties at key locations.
The Ministry’s efforts aim to revitalize the Brahmaputra River as a vital trade and commerce route, offering significant economic opportunities for the region’s residents.
