The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is working to ensure the safe return of 17 Filipino seafarers taken hostage by Yemen’s Houthi armed group in the Red Sea. The agency has been in continuous communication with the families of the hostages and is providing counseling to guide them through the difficult times. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has also stated that the government does not pay ransom in such situations and is using diplomatic representations with various countries to secure the release of the hostages.

The seizure of the ship Galaxy Leader is reportedly connected to the conflict between Israel and Hamas militants. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that the seizure was in response to the “heinous acts against our Palestinian brothers in Gaza and the West Bank.” In response to the situation, a Catholic bishop has prayed for the safety of the Filipino seafarers and has called for continuous efforts from the government to work for their freedom. Masses across the country will be offered for the safety of the hostages.
