Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal claimed that 90% of waterway development projects completed in the last decade, urging young people to take advantage of the potential for cheaper transportation of goods and career opportunities in the maritime sector. He made these statements at a program where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of Inland Waterways Authority of India projects worth over Rs 284 crore.
Sonowal also inaugurated a passenger and cargo terminal at Bogibeel, an inland waterway terminal at Sonamura, and announced the construction of six tourist jetties, 19 passenger ships, and the expansion of 16 jetties. The Minister also emphasized the rediscovery of waterways’ potential under the Modi government and the increase in job opportunities in the maritime sector.
He highlighted the government’s focus on the development of the Northeast region and the significant investment made in the area. Sonowal stressed the importance of fully exploiting completed projects and the need for youth to be curious and eager to learn as they harness the potential of improved waterways. He also pointed out the various job opportunities available in shipbuilding, maintenance, and navigation.
