By 2047, India aims to increase its port capacity to handle 10,000 million tons of cargo annually, marking a fourfold rise. Union Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the country’s commitment to achieving these ambitious targets during his participation in Nor Shipping 2025 in Norway.
The Indian delegation is focused on learning from leading nations to enhance maritime infrastructure. An official announcement revealed a partnership between Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and Norway’s Kongsberg to construct India’s first Polar Research Vessel (PRV).
Sonowal emphasized the importance of collaboration with countries experienced in maritime development. He stated that these partnerships would ensure the integration of global best practices into domestic maritime operations.
In addition to expanding port capacity, the Maritime India Vision 2047 aims to boost inland waterway freight volume by 400%, targeting 500 million tons per annum by the same deadline. These initiatives underline India’s strategic focus on enhancing its maritime capabilities for future growth.
