Alfa Laval has recently secured an order to replace 18 ballast water treatment systems on vessels owned by a major European shipowner. This order reflects a growing demand for the replacement of malfunctioning systems and highlights the increasing market for Alfa Laval’s BWMS replacement offerings. Strict regulations and frequent inspections are compelling shipping companies to ensure the proper functioning of their ballast water treatment systems to avoid costly downtime and potential business disruptions. With the majority of the world fleet already equipped with BWMS, the retrofit market is nearing saturation, leading to a lack of support and upgrade options as regulations evolve.

In response to the high demand for BWMS replacement, Alfa Laval has replaced over 250 systems from 30 different manufacturers in the past two years, with the order book for replacements continuing to grow. Tobias Doescher, Head of Global Sales, Business Development, and Marketing at Alfa Laval PureBallast, notes the increasing need for replacing installed systems due to market consolidation. The company has been contacted by numerous shipowners and ship management companies worldwide facing issues that their current suppliers cannot resolve, and Alfa Laval is stepping in to provide cost-efficient and sustainable solutions.

Alfa Laval approaches replacement projects with a professional mindset, utilizing electrochlorination (EC) and UV technology. Each replacement project begins with a thorough onboard assessment of the existing system by a qualified expert to determine necessary replacements and identify reusable components, resulting in significant cost savings for clients. This tailored approach ensures that customers achieve compliance with BWMS regulations and have peace of mind regarding their ballast water management equipment. Peter Sahlén, Head of Alfa Laval PureBallast, emphasizes the company’s commitment to partnering with customers throughout the lifecycle of their ballast water management equipment, investing in experts, staying abreast of regulations, and offering new services to facilitate compliance. Alfa Laval has even introduced the PureBallast 3 Ultra, developed based on years of customer feedback.
