DP World and APM Terminals have joined forces to establish the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA), a coalition aimed at accelerating the transition to zero emissions for container handling equipment (CHE) at ports. ZEPA will begin operations in 2024 and is open to all industry participants, including terminal operators, OEMs, port authorities, and government entities. The alliance’s focus is on promoting the adoption of battery-electric CHE and driving emissions reductions at ports.
The decision to launch ZEPA was announced at COP28, with the two companies emphasizing the importance of collective decarbonization action. The alliance is based on research showing that battery-electric CHE can become as competitive or even more competitive than diesel CHE in the next two to eight years through targeted collective action. ZEPA’s work includes promoting the expansion of BE-CHE production capacity, reducing product costs, and ensuring that terminal operators and grid infrastructure are ready for the introduction of BE-CHE and shore power.
The two operators emphasized that ZEPA is a results-oriented coalition with a clear focus and objective, and that the key findings will be made available to the entire industry and not just ZEPA members. They also stressed the need for joint, industry-wide action to create affordable and attractive battery-electric CHE that can be deployed globally.
