The project includes a plot of around 475,000 m² with 1,000 meters of deep sea quay, while the Port of Rotterdam Authority is now building the new quay walls, which will be completed by mid-2024.

The expansion project is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026 and will increase the capacity of the Dutch terminal by around 2 million TEU.

The additional section of the terminal will operate with net-zero emissions, according to a statement, and will be fully automated and ready for shore power installation.

AP Moller – Maersk already rented 185,000 m² of land in the same region last year for the construction of transhipment and cold stores, which will open in 2024.

In addition to the new terminal site, an empty depot of around 16,000 m² will be built for Star Container Services, a subsidiary of AP Moller – Maersk, on the site immediately adjacent to APM Terminal Maasvlakte II.

“We are very pleased with APM Terminals’ decision to expand the terminal and choose Rotterdam as the hub for its Western European operations,” said Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority.
