India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways recently named Manu Bhaker, the accomplished Olympic medalist, as their brand ambassador. Bhaker, known for her shooting prowess and recent success at the Paris Summer Olympics, hails from a maritime background as the daughter of a Marine Engineer. This appointment aims to leverage Bhaker’s influence to promote and champion the Indian marine sector, a source of national pride and significance.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed immense pride in Bhaker’s appointment, highlighting the symbolic significance of her involvement in the maritime industry. He emphasized Bhaker’s unique position as a role model for Indian youth, showcasing the opportunities and contributions available in the marine sector as a pathway towards India’s self-reliance goals by 2047. The minister also honored several other accomplished women in the maritime field, celebrating their remarkable achievements in nation-building.
The event, organized by the Chennai Port Authority in partnership with the Kamarajar Port Authority, served as a platform to recognize and commend the achievements of women in the maritime sector. Notable figures such as Lt. Commander Vartika Joshi, Sonali Banerjee, Captain Teena Joey, Thulasimathi Murugesan, Manisha Ramadass, and Rupali Raj Joshi were acknowledged for their excellence and contributions to the industry. This initiative underscores the importance of promoting gender diversity and recognizing the valuable role of women in advancing India’s maritime sector.
