The 617-foot American Courage freighter ran aground on the St. Clair River near Marine City, Michigan, carrying 20,000 tons of rocks. The U.S. Coast Guard was alerted to the incident at 7:21 a.m. on Tuesday and is working with the vessel’s owner, Grand River Navigation, to develop a plan for safely refloating the ship. While the river remains open to navigation, a safety notice has been issued for mariners to exercise caution in the area.

Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries or pollution resulting from the incident. The Coast Guard is focusing on prioritizing vessel integrity and environmental protection while minimizing the economic impact of the grounding. Lt. jg Adeeb Ahmad, Detroit Sector Public Affairs Officer, stated that they are collaborating with port partners and international, state, and federal agencies to ensure the safety of the waterway and a swift resolution to the situation.

A full investigation into the incident is currently underway to determine the cause and assess any impact on vessel safety. The Coast Guard is also continuing to work with its partners to provide assistance and ensure safe navigation in the affected area.
