KAUST recently announced that Freire Shipyards in Vigo, Spain, will be constructing its new research vessel, RV Thuwal II, set to be completed in 2026. This vessel will be the first regional class research vessel for Saudi Arabia, providing access to the Red Sea’s coastal waters and deep sea. Designed by Glosten in the United States, the vessel will be overseen by Maritime Survey International from Australia during construction. RV Thuwal II will serve as the flagship of Saudi Arabia’s research vessel fleet, supporting various marine research interests, giga-projects, and government ministries, ultimately strengthening the nation’s research capabilities and fostering international partnerships.

With a length of 50 meters, width of 12.8 meters, and a 30-year lifespan, RV Thuwal II is designed with modularity to accommodate different experimental laboratories and future marine technologies. It will also incorporate green propulsion technologies to reduce its carbon footprint. In addition to its primary research functions, the vessel will be equipped to respond to emergencies such as oil spills and marine accidents in the Red Sea. Capable of accommodating 30 people, including researchers and crew, RV Thuwal II will have the capability to explore the depths of the Red Sea using advanced underwater vehicles for surveys and data collection.

KAUST Vice President of Research Pierre Magistretti emphasized the significance of RV Thuwal II in enhancing Saudi Arabia’s research infrastructure and exploring the Red Sea. The collaboration between Freire Shipyard and KAUST on this project signifies a commitment to scientific advancement and technological innovation in the region. Marcos Friere Garcia, one of the directors at Freire Shipyard, expressed pride in contributing to the vessel’s construction and the opportunities it will create for scientific collaboration and exploration in the Red Sea.
