The American Waterways Operators (AWO) has recognized Crowley’s mariners for their heroic actions in two successful man-overboard rescues, one in Washington and the other in San Francisco Bay. James C. Fowler, senior vice president of Crowley Shipping, commended the mariners for their instinctive response to protect life, highlighting their character as the driving force behind their actions. The first rescue took place in April off Anacortes, Washington, where the crew of the tugboat Guard saved a man who had fallen overboard from his sailboat. In June, the crew of the ship assist tug Apollo witnessed a passenger falling overboard in San Francisco Bay while assisting another vessel. The crew immediately called in the emergency and stayed on scene until the person was safely rescued from the water.

For their courageous efforts, the two tug crews were honored with the American Waterways Honor and Excellence in Rescue Operations (HERO) award by AWO. This award recognizes mariners from AWO member companies who demonstrate exceptional bravery and dedication to safety through acts such as rescues and responding to distress calls. AWO Director of Safety & Sustainability, Michael Breslin, praised the crews of Apollo and Guard for their commitment to safety and everyday bravery, stating that our waterways are safer because of them. Mariners who meet the criteria for the award can be nominated through AWO’s online nomination form.

AWO’s recognition of Crowley’s mariners highlights the importance of quick and decisive action in emergency situations at sea. The HERO award serves as a testament to the dedication and courage of maritime professionals who risk their lives to save others. By honoring these mariners, AWO aims to promote a culture of safety and excellence within the industry, ensuring the continued protection of lives and assets on the water.
