Hanwha Ocean, a South Korean shipbuilding company, is looking to build on Daewoo Shipbuilding’s legacy in LNG gas carriers and invest in the future of the shipbuilding operation. During the recent Gastech 2023 conference, Hanwha Ocean presented a series of new designs, including a massive LNG carrier. DNV has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to the design. Hanwha Ocean highlights that a quarter of the LNG carriers operating worldwide were built in its shipyards, and they continue to hold a strong orderbook in the segment. They are also moving aggressively to introduce new, larger LNG carrier designs in anticipation of large orders from Qatar. The design presented by Hanwha Ocean is similar to the Q-Max, the largest LNG carriers, and has a capacity to transport 270,000 cbm of LNG.

DNV conducted a comprehensive structural verification and feasibility study for the design, validating critical structural details and reviewing the sloshing calculation for cargo tanks. The LNG carrier will be equipped with an X-DF engine and re-liquefaction system to offer the best performance and improve CII. Hanwha Ocean also exhibited a green ship LNG carrier concept during Gastech, which incorporates next-generation eco-friendly technologies such as rotor sails and a carbon capture system.

Hanwha Ocean plans to invest nearly $500 million to develop eco-friendly propulsion systems based on ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen, as well as ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen carriers. They also aim to achieve $22 billion in sales and an operating profit of nearly $4 billion by 2040.
