DNV has granted HD Hyundai a general approval for ship application (GASA) for a new support system for independent tanks on liquefied gas carriers, which it has deemed a “world-first” concept. The system, made of high-strength composite materials, is designed to help tanks withstand upward force in case of flooding in the hold space, enhancing structural stability.
The new system, a fusion of carbon fibre-reinforced plastics with superior tensile strength compared to steel, is expected to improve the competitiveness and safety of vessels with independent tanks. HD Hyundai’s executive vice president, Lee Hyun-Ho, highlighted the efforts to apply composites in shipbuilding and expressed optimism that the design’s ease of construction could lead to increased orders.
DNV regional manager for Korea and Japan, Vidar Dolonen, praised the partnership with HD Hyundai and emphasized the importance of continuous technological innovation in the maritime sector. The system was jointly designed by Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Hyundai Mipo dockyard, and received approval from DNV and the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR).
