During a symposium organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), industry experts emphasized the importance of mentorship and educational opportunities to support women in the male-dominated maritime sector. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez highlighted the need to invest in women’s education and professional development to empower them, drive innovation, and foster sustainability in the industry. Challenges discussed included barriers to women’s safety and advancement, such as lack of safety gear in their size, inadequate access to training, and the risk of bullying and harassment.

Panel discussions also covered topics like recruiting and retaining women in the workforce, mentorship, improving safety culture, and raising awareness about gender-inclusive opportunities at sea. The importance of education and networking, as well as the establishment of Women in Maritime Associations (WIMAs) in various regions, were highlighted as key strategies to support women in the industry. The upcoming 2024 Women in Maritime Survey was also discussed, aiming to track progress and identify areas for improvement in gender equality in the maritime sector.

The event featured prominent figures in the industry, including CEOs, maritime specialists, and representatives from organizations like WISTA International. A live illustration by artist Camilla Aubrey captured the day’s discussions, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to support and promote women in the maritime sector through mentorship, education, and awareness campaigns.
