The US-based company Crowley has received the first all-electric, ship-based harbor tug in the United States, called eWolf. This tug is designed for emission-free operation and is the first of its kind in the US and only the third worldwide. It will be deployed to the Port of San Diego in spring 2024, once the Crowley Microgrid Shore Charging Station is completed.
The introduction of the eWolf tug reflects Crowley’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonization, aiming to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors by 2050. The project is a collaboration between Crowley and various federal, state, and local partners, including the Port, the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District, the California Air Resources Board, the US EPA, and the US Maritime Administration.
The eWolf tug, built by Master Boat Builders in Alabama, is expected to produce significantly fewer pollutants in its first decade of operation, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s calculations. It is equipped with a six megawatt-hour energy storage system for 70 short tons of bollard pull, allowing it to complete a full day of typical work before recharging is required. The project partners are proud of the ship’s innovative and sustainable nature and look forward to seeing it in operation in San Diego soon.
