The White House has issued an executive order to enhance the security of the country’s ports and strengthen national security. This plan includes intentions to bring domestic crane manufacturing capacity back to the United States, with a focus on safe ship-to-shore cranes, and an investment of over $20 billion in U.S. port infrastructure. Concerns about Chinese-made STS container cranes potentially being used for spying have prompted this action. In addition, the U.S. Maritime Administration has issued a warning about potential cybersecurity threats from Chinese-made port equipment.
The Executive Order grants the Department of Homeland Security expanded authority to address maritime cyber threats, including setting cybersecurity standards for American port networks and systems. The U.S. Coast Guard will also have clear authority to respond to malicious cyber activity in the Maritime Transportation System, which supports $5.4 trillion in economic activity per year. The administration is also committed to rebuilding U.S. industrial capacity for port crane production with trusted partners and investment in U.S. port infrastructure.
