The family of one of the victims who died in a fire on a petroleum tanker near Karangasem, East Bali, is expressing frustration over the lack of compensation or burial costs provided by the shipping company. Risma Trye Monica, the sister of the deceased 4th Machinist, stated that despite promises made by PT ASL, the company has failed to deliver any financial support since the tragic incident in August 2024. The family was told they would receive insurance payouts and assistance from the State Social Security Company – BPJS, but no funds have been received as of December 2024.
The insurance laws in Indonesia mandate a payment of Rp. 150 million to be given to the family of a deceased crew member in cases of accidents at sea. The fire on the Petroleum Tanker Elisabeth 1 resulted in the death of five crew members and injuries to 15 others. While some crew members were treated for minor injuries and released, the family of the deceased are still awaiting the promised compensation from PT ASL and BPJS. Despite efforts to secure the funds, no payments have been made, leaving the family in limbo.
Risma continues to seek clarity on the compensation promised by the shipping company and has been informed by the BPJS Office that funds are available for the victims of the tragedy. However, to access the funds, the family must obtain a written recommendation from PT ASL. Despite ongoing efforts to follow up with the company and BPJS, no funds have been released, leaving the family frustrated and without clear information on the status of their claims.
