The master of a ro/ro ferry on the Greek island of Andros is facing criminal charges after a car loading procedure went awry at the port of Gavrio. The incident occurred during rough weather conditions with gale-force winds buffeting the vessel as passengers were boarding via the stern ramp. Video footage from the scene showed that the ramp was not making consistent contact with the pier, leading to a vehicle becoming stuck halfway on the ramp and pier.

Despite attempts to rectify the situation, the ferry departed from the wharf, leaving the car behind and causing concern for the safety of the vessel. The master’s decision to pull away from the pier in the midst of the chaotic loading process led to his arrest on charges of “dangerous interference with ship traffic.” Following the incident, the operator of the ferry, Saos Ferries, has removed the master from his position and temporarily halted the operations of the vessel for further investigation.

The dangerous loading procedure at the port of Gavrio has raised questions about the safety protocols in place during adverse weather conditions. Passengers and crew members were seen rushing to push the car off the ramp before seeking shelter in the hold as the ferry departed. The decision to charge the master with criminal offenses underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for accountability in maritime operations to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members.
