Denmark’s Scandlines is set to introduce a groundbreaking hybrid-electric ferry, currently undergoing trials in Turkey. This vessel, known by its hull number 1090 and code name Futura, will be the first in Scandlines’ fleet capable of fully zero-emission operations. With a 10 MW battery, it can complete the route between Rodbyhaven, Denmark, and Puttgarden, Germany, in about one hour at 10 knots, or 45 minutes at up to 16 knots in hybrid mode. Shore charging will allow for a quick 12-minute recharge.
Designed by LMG Marin, the ferry is 485 feet long and 23% larger than existing vessels on the route, accommodating 66 freight units and 140 passengers. It features a modular design that enables conversion for car transport and can carry trucks on both decks. The vessel’s azimuth thruster, Azipull, will enhance energy efficiency while minimizing noise and vibrations.
Built at Cemre Shipyard in Turkey, the ferry has completed significant testing, including Sea Acceptance Tests. Scandlines is collaborating with Lloyd’s Register and the Danish Maritime Authority to ensure thorough verification. After its handover, the ferry will make stops in Gibraltar and Brest, France, before commencing service on the vital Fehmarnbelt route connecting Denmark and Germany.
