Fiji: The International Day of Women in Maritime, celebrated recently, aims to promote the recruitment, retention, and empowerment of women in the maritime sector. Minister for Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, highlighted the importance of this day in increasing the visibility of women in the maritime community and advocating for gender equality in decision-making roles. He acknowledged the male-dominated nature of the industry and emphasized the need for men to support women’s advancement.
Minister Tuisawau emphasized the significant contributions women make to maritime safety and industry development, whether as seafarers, professionals, or leaders. The theme of the event, “Safe Horizons: Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety,” highlighted the crucial role women play in enhancing safety measures within the maritime sector. Tuisawau called for collective efforts to create a supportive work environment where individuals of all genders can thrive and contribute to the sector’s growth and safety.
The Minister urged for a barrier-free work environment where women can excel and be represented at decision-making levels within the maritime sector. He emphasized the need for men to actively support women’s advancement and work together to overcome barriers. Tuisawau recognized the importance of women in enhancing safety measures within the industry and highlighted their significant contributions as seafarers, professionals, and leaders.
